Genosha is a crescent-shaped island in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. It began as a rich apartheid-style state that enslaved its mutants, became Magneto's mutant haven, and was razed in 2001 when Wild Sentinels killed about sixteen million mutants. Later the island saw M-Day, Selene's Necrosha, Magneto's rebuilding and the sale of its ruins as the algorithmic republic Gigosha.

Genosha is an island off the eastern seaboard. In the original timeline it is Magneto's heavily fortified, steel-reinforced hideout for the Brotherhood of Mutants. In the revised timeline, Magneto founds it in 1992 as a nation where mutants live in peace away from human persecution, and Jean Grey seeks him out there.
