Blind from birth and sighted through a VISOR, then implants, he rose from Enterprise-D helmsman to chief engineer under Picard. He helped Cochrane's first warp flight in 2063, saved the Ba'ku mission in 2375, and by 2401 curated the Fleet Museum, where he had secretly rebuilt the Enterprise-D that helped stop the Borg and Changeling plot.

  7. 2375 On the Ba'ku planet his sight is restored briefly, yet he backs Picard against the Federation plan to move the Ba'ku. source
  8. 2379 He takes part in the Enterprise mission to Romulus and the battle with the Scimitar, where Data sacrifices himself. source
  9. 2401 La Forge leads the effort to rebuild and use the Enterprise-D against the Borg and Changeling plot. source
